Acadia National Park is probably the best park we have been to as a couple. The views were incredible and so many different hikes to choose from. The best advice we got was to purchase our park pass ahead of time so we didn’t have to wait in line upon arrival, which with COVID was long. The one thing we didn’t do and cost us time was also purchasing a park map in advance. Highly recommend as navigating around the park without one is almost impossible. The other thing we wish we would have done was plan a few hikes in advance as there are some trails, which if you’re afraid of heights like me, will not be easily accomplished (or very much fun as you’re hyperventilating). We found some great trails that were challenging and gave us great views without those feelings of hanging off the cliffs.
One of our first summits was Mt. Sargent and it was spectacular. We accessed it via the carriage trails which were great by themselves for biking which we did on our last morning when our legs couldn’t take another day of hiking (3 was our max)!
Biking around the lakes provided scenic views and the trails carriage trails were not as flat as we had hoped but they were still a welcome change from all the hiking.
Our favorite part of the trip was by far our morning hike to watch the sunrise over Cadillac Mountain. We had to wake up before 5 am but it was worth it. We drove up part of the way in the dark with our best friend who joined us the night before and was a seasoned pro when it came to viewing sunrise. He was not joking about the number of people who would be there. Once we arrived with blankets, coffee and cameras we setup in a good location taking some “before” pictures and talking and then we watched sun rise through a sea of clouds. As it started getting brighter the crowds hushed taking it all in until the sun burst through the horizon and lit up the mountain. Definitely worth waking up at an ungodly hour and a great way to end our time in Bar Harbor.
