Time traveling back to pre-COVID and our last trip before the pandemic struck we found ourselves getting on a plane heading out west to Beaver Creek, Colorado to enjoy a ski vacation and ring in the new year of 2020.

Little did we know this would be our last trip before social distancing, quarantine and stay at home orders would become part of our everyday vocabulary. After a long 2019 filled with its own share of ups and downs we were thrilled to be out west and ready to get in first tracks on the first of the year. We arrived the day before New Years Eve and got settled into our hotel – the Westin at Beaver Creek – where we had a full equipped condo slopeside. This made getting on/off the mountain so easy and the ski valet collected our ski/snowboards every night and were nice and warm as we got ready in the morning.

The mountain was really well setup and was easy to traverse for skiiers and boarders alike. The snow was really nice as there had been a storm just before we arrived and on Day 1 we skiied as it continued snowing around 3 inches every night which made waking up to fresh powder every morning. The views were spectacular and there were so many runs and lifts that even though we were there over the end of the Christmas holiday rush we rarely waited in lines.

I was excited to try skiing again but a little apprehensive after having not been on skiis for over 10 years so I signed up for a ski lesson to get a reminder while Jon headed out and skiied all the diamonds and bowls his heart desired.

When we weren’t skiing, re-learning to ski, or snowboarding we sampled some great restaurants in the town of Beaver Creek. Our favorite, and the one we visited on New Years Eve, was the Blue Plate in Avon. It was a quick 5 minute trip from the hotel and they were very accomodating being totally booked. They set us up at the bar where we ordered drinks and looked over the menu. There were so many good options it was hard to choose but ultimately decided to go with the ribeye for two along with several apps including the Elli’s brussel sprouts that we still talk about!

After skiing on a few different Colorado resorts over the last few years including Breckenridge and Key Stone we really enjoyed Beaver Creek. It was a great town, easy to get around and a lot of options for both newbie’s and seasoned skiiers/snowboarders.
