Cabin fever was in full effect due to COVID and we needed a break from our house and the summer heat so we picked Maine, a place that has been on our list for some time. One of our best friends lives just outside Portland so we did some coordinating and after much discussion decided to split our trip into two parts. We would start by driving up to Bar Harbor where we could easily access Acadia national park and enjoy some much needed time outside. We’d then make our way down to Kennebunkport by way of Freeport and Portland to partake in some LL Bean outlet shopping, great food, and of course chill on the beach! The drive to Bar Harbor from Westchester was smooth sine we left before the Labor Holiday holiday rush and it took us about 7 hours with a couple stops along with the way. The first of which was greeting the moose upon entering Maine.
We stayed at the Harborside Hotel in Bar Harbor which was fantastic. We loved the location as it was a really short walk to town for lots of dining options. It also has two separate heated pools which was a great way to unwind after driving all day. The view is gorgeous as it sits right on the bay. When it’s low tide you can walk across to an island that is technically part of the park and go for a nice hike. We didn’t do the hike but we walked across after breakfast one morning and it was really interesting to see everyone out and the cars parked on what would be filled with water in just a few hours.
We didn’t have too much time as we were celebrating our 10-year anniversary so after an hour at the pool we went back and got ready to go out to dinner. The hotel provided great backdrops for some photos and then we made our way over to Havana for a delicious dinner where Jon got a steak and I had paella that was so delicious and fresh I couldn’t believe it. The best part was that we walked (with some coats on as it gets pretty chilly at night) from our hotel and back taking in all of Bar Harbor lit up at night.
Next up hiking in Acadia in the morning!
